I. Future Proofing
Penang

In line with the State Government’s commitment to transforming its forex-earning industries to be aligned with global trends, and realising its vision of making Penang an International City, PDC Telco has since completed the Design and Architecture of the 5-ring fibre routes throughout the Island, and the pan-island network is expected to be full operational by Quarter 4, 2014.

Whereas, the high-growth Batu Kawan Industrial Park and the surrounding residential and economic zones on the mainland are being given the top priority in synchronising with the fibre routes on the Penang Island, and being developed in conjunction with the targetting opening of the Second Penang Bridge Link by Quarter 4, 2013.

The Batu Kawan Industrial Park fiber-optics backhaul network is expected to be completed by end 2013, while the full ring-architecture of the entire mainland fiber routes covering all market centres in Seberang Prai is expected to be completed by end 2015, phase by phase.

It is envisaged that the Island-Mainland fibre network, called the Penang Next Generation Network (or Penang NGN), will serve the telecommunications needs of our valued investors from both the domestic and international sectors. It will also be a catalyst in spinning-off other technology and service-based industries in Penang.

The Penang NGN will be implemented in three packages. In Package IA, PDC Telco will be involved in laying out 200km of optical fibres throughout Penang Island, providing the backbone for mobile, wireless and broadband service providers.

Route 1 will run from the north to the south of the east coast of the island, and will encompass the Penang International Airport (PIA), the Penang Bridge and the Second Bridge. It will also pass through the districts of Gelugor, Jelutong, George Town and Tanjong Tokong, as well as Tanjung Bungah in the north.

Route 2 also runs from north to south, although it will be located further inland than Route 1. Among the major districts that are served by this route are the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone, as well as Bandar Bayan Baru, Farlin, Air Hitam, George Town, and Tanjung Tokong.
Route 3 is sandwiched between Routes 1 and 2, and its coverage includes the Central Business District of George Town, as well as parts of Jelutong, Farlim, Gelugor, Bayan Lepas and the PIA.

Route 4 will run through the southern part of Penang Island, and will cover the districts of Bandar Bayan Baru, Balik Pulau and Teluk Kumbar. Then there is Route 5, which is located near the western end of the island, and offers coverage to the districts of Balik Pulau, Teluk Bahang and Batu Ferrenghi.

All five routes will be constructed concurrently.

THE MAINLAND ROUTES

Package 1B of Penang NGN involves implementation phases for the mainlain areas in Seberang Prai. With the exception of Batu Kawan and the key market centres currently served by the copper network, route alignment and all necessary preparation for the Seberang Prai fibre-optics network is expected to be completed by the first half of 2013. Whereas, Batu Kawan and the market centres in Seberang Prai will be implemented in close synchronisation with Package 1A on the island.
