Top Ten Things Heard At FTTH Council APAC Conference
Tarikh : 09-06-2014

1. Roland Montagne, IDATE principle analyst :
“The best friend of fiber is wireless. Fiber handles up to 75% of mobile broadband Wi-Fi offload.”

2. TM chief strategy officer Farid Sani
“The future of mobility is fixed. The length of the wireless portion of networks is going to get smaller and the length of wired portion will get longer.”

3. Khoong Hock Yun, IDA assistant CEO
suggests to regulators looking at NBN projects: “Do your homework, which allows you to be bold in pushing incumbents. You are not there to kill existing players. But you don’t want them to hold back the rest.”

4. Moncef Maghrebi, associate director at Arthur D. Little
“The fiber business case is generally based on too ambitious assumptions for the key drivers, such as sub uptake, ARPU and opex. Though they get capex [assumptions] right.”

5. Wei Leping, China Telecom’s chairman of the technology steering committee :
“You can’t control data traffic growth and you can’t improve ARPU – the only thing you can do is reduce the cost of the network.”

6. TE Connectivity director Kevin Ressler
“Data centers are engines of the cloud.”

7. Jeff Ooi, chairman PDC Telecommunications in Malaysia
“There is a lack of awareness about fiber. Many engineers and consultants still think specing a building on fiber is a lot more expensive than copper. We have to correct that myth.”

8. Ovum principle analyst Julie Kunstler :
“The FTTH Council has set a goal of 500 million FTTH subs by 2020. Ovum forecasts a gap of 190 million.  What can we do to fix that?”

9. TE Connectivity VP Mark Hesling :
“Fiber is going deeper in all networks and getting closer to the consumer. But there are a lot of hurdles to overcome. Even when fiber is wanted, there are still challenges.”

10. Hong Kong Broadband CTO Lo Sui Lun :
“Do consumers need 1 Gbps? People asked the same question years ago with 100 Mbps. The answer is no, if based on current applications.”
